Jonny Cross celebrates yet another convincing 2nd team victory in his own unique style below.
This was the first game back at Varley Park since November 14th for Burnage 2’s as they welcomed 5th placed Trafford Metrovick 2’s.
Trafford MV didn’t start as strong as they would have liked to with a player down as the Burnage backs carved numerous opportunities throughout the game, freely running and scoring; however a resilient performance irrespective of the final score line was testimony to Trafford and they will no doubt be a thorn in many side for the remainder of the season.
Back to the report; and after scoring 2 well worked try’s in the backs Ben ‘I felt a twinge’ Robertson called it a day in the centres after only 10 mins of play allowing Cross join the fray. This injury was unfortunate as was Robertson’s chat up lines to some of the girls watching the game...
After his heroics last week vs. Sale; doing the hard running, making ground, and general all round quality play last week, Man of the Match winger Andy Ascroft got his just rewards this week with 4 superbly taken tries and a jug for the lads.
I would like to remain respectful to the opposition at this point as stated above, and dust over much of the game as to dwell on the 11 tries during the game would not be what Burnage RFC is about, however for the benefit of the readers, a brief description as follows:
The forwards got on the score sheet, with second row Tim Wella and prop Steve Barlow scoring one each, Unselfish play from Tom Blayney allowed Jonny Cross the easiest of finishes and Fullback Ali ‘looking for contact’ Fisher got his score also. Higgins scores his second try in two weeks/6 seasons, depending if you're a glass half full or half empty person.
Mark Lyons cemented his position as the best 2nds goal kicker for this season with a sublime 10 from 11 kicks and was unlucky to not get the man of the match for his performance.
I don’t think there were any further aspects to mention from the game of try scorers, 11 tries, excellent running from the backs and support play from the forwards, no daft cross-field kicks etc.
Finally, the ‘Focus player’ returns for this week: Prop Steve Barlow, a fantastic addition to the team, he played at rivals Davenport RFC before arriving at Burnage through 1st team manager Scotty Redman. Steve is well known for his quality lineout, organising and powerful scrummaging but something you didn’t know is that ex-soldier Steve is also a dab hand at finger painting and loves reading these match reports so I included this poem for you mate!
“Not every flower can save love, but a rose can. Not every plant survives thirst, but a cactus can. Not every vegetable can read, but look at you having a go”
Moving onwards to next week and another home fixture this time in the Raging Bull trophy and Stockport 3rds, training Monday and Thursday, say no more!
